Mahashay Dharmpul Gulati was an Indian businessman, founder and CEO of MDH, an Indian spice company, who died on 3rd December at the age of 98.

Born on 27th March 1923, he was commonly referred to as the spice king of India, and was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award. Although Dharampul lived a long life, his sudden death left many people disappointed.

There goes a famous saying, ‘If you don’t go after what you want, you will never get it.. It was something that can be applied to  Dharampal’s life. He wasn’t always, wealthy and famous, but he worked hard and achieved so much in his 98 years.

Dharmpal moved to Delhi after the partition of India. He then opened a shop in a shack and started selling spices like his father. He later opened a  shop and expanded from there. To further expand, he bought a plot of land in Kirti Nagar in New Delhi to set up his own spice factory. From there he built his own group which later evolved into India’s leading spice manufacturers expanding to 15 factories.

At the age of 94, Dharampal was the highest-paid CEO in India, in 2017. He took home over ₹21 crores as salary last fiscal year. Two years later, on March 16, 2019, the 14th President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Padma Bhushan award for Trade & Industry. Today Dharampal Gulati has a range of 62 different products available in over 150 different packages. These packages include ground and blended spices, it also sells other products, such as saffron. Dharampal Gulati has come a long way, even after he faced difficulties, he did his best and became a true legend.

Dharampal Gulati’s personal beliefs in sincere work, quality products, and affordable prices were mirrored in his spices. Very few brands have reached the pinnacle of popularity Dharampal Gulati has. His is a true rags-to-riches tale and is an inspiration for young entrepreneurs today that teaches an important life lesson – success doesn’t come without failure and success can’t be achieved without putting in a milestone.

I would like to end by saying, Dharampal’s rags to riches life is just one step away if you put in your everything.
