Recently, scientists monitored a cuckoo that flew more than 7,500 miles from Southern Africa to its breeding ground in Mongolia. The scientists have been monitoring this bird using a satellite tag.
Onon, is the name of one of the five cuckoos that the Mongolia cuckoo project had tagged. Onon seems to be an adventurous and rather fearless cuckoo. It crossed thousands of kilometers of the Indian ocean without stopping, flying at an average speed of 60km/h, and travelling countries as far apart as Kenya, Saudi Arabia, and Bangladesh. Onon also survived ocean crossings and high winds after travelling 16 countries. Scientist call this ‘a mammoth journey’.
Out of all the five tagged birds, Onon was the only one to have been recorded as finishing its astonishing return journey. This was one of the longest migrations recorded by any Land bird that is about to be completed by Onon.
