In the past 40 years, North Korea has fired over 150 missiles. This has led the UN to impose strict sanctions on the country under Kim-Jong-Un. The city of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, has developed new missiles over the years and testing them regularly by releasing them into the sea.

What are Missiles?

A missile is a weapon that is thrown at a particular target or shot from an engine or gun. It’s a rocket-propelled weapon that is designed to carry and deliver an explosive at high speed. It can either fly on a fixed trajectory (called ballistic missile) or in a trajectory that can be controlled during the flight (called guided missile).

In North Kore’s case, the important question to ask is – why does the country keep testing its nuclear weapons even though it comes at such a high cost?

Here are some reasons:

  1. North Korea has built many weapons over the years, it thus keeps testing them and making new ones that are more powerful.
  2. The country believes that it needs to protect itself from invasion from potential threats.
  3. Due to the grim situation in the Asian country (i.e., food shortages), these missiles are sometimes fired to give hope to the people and bind them together (a show of power).
  4. North Korea wants to be recognized as a nuclear power

This is why it keeps firing and testing its missiles even at the expense of its own people and global condemnation.

North Korea is a strict dictatorship (a form of government characterized by the absolute authority by a single leader) and is led by Kim Jong Un, who is the supreme leader of the dictatorship.
