On 10 July 2020, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, publicized the launch of a 750 MW (Megawatt) solar power plant in the Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, to the nation, through video conferencing. The cost of the construction of this plant will be around 4,500 crore Rupees.

The Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited plant is owned by Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (MPUVN) and operated by Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Limited (RUMSL) and is Asia’s Largest Solar Plant.

The plant includes three different units of 250 MW, each located on a 500 – hectare plot of land, with a significant amount of the equipment coming from China. Being one of the largest plants in India, it is said to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by 15 lakh tonnes a year.

International Finance Corporation, a World Bank group company, has invested around 2,800 crore Rupees in the project, and some assistance from the Central Government of 138 crore rupees has also been provided.

The Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited will receive around 76% of the power from the plant, whereas the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation receives the remaining 26%. It is the first-ever project to receive funding from the World Bank. With this project’s completion, many of the country’s power problems will be solved.
