The Beating Retreat ceremony took place on the 29th of January. It is the last of the Republic Day celebrations. It is a very grand ceremony that is held at Raisina Hills –   .Bands of Army, Navy and Air Force perform in this. It begins with the arrival of the President of India. The Prime Minister and Chief of Army, Navy and Air Force are also present.

How did Beating Retreat begin?

Beating Retreat is an old British tradition. It began in the 16th century in England when, after a day of fight (during war), drums were sounded to mark that the day had ended and the camps were closing. The sound of the drums meant that the troops (soldiers) could retreat (come back) to their camps for the night.

Where’s Raisina Hill

Raisina Hill is the area in New Delhi where there are many important  government buildings, like Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime Minister’s Office and many other buildings. Many other  important buildings are around this area – like the Parliament of India, Rajpath and India Gate .
