Who was Nelson Mandela?
Nelson Mandela was a freedom fighter and leader of South Africa . He fought against the government as they treated the dark skinned people differently. This rule was called the Apartheid Rule.
What is an Apartheid rule?
Apartheid was a way of ruling and unfair treatment in South Africa by the white government. It was an unequal rule based on skin colour. Such a discrimination (meaning different treatment) was called apartheid rule. People were treated differently because of their skin and features. This is what Nelson Mandela fought against, for which he was put in prison.
Why was Nelson Mandela famous ?
Nelson Mandela was famous because he fought apartheid and became a leader of the African people. He was the first dark skinned (black) president of South Africa voted by majority of the people. His fight against the apartheid rule of the government, led South Africa to have an equal democratic government.
What is a democracy?
A government which allows all the people in a country to vote for their own representatives is called a democracy. Nelson Mandela led the people of South Africa into winning democracy and after fighting hard won when South Africa was made democratic .Nelson Mandela was arrested and kept in jail for 27 years for fighting against the apartheid rule .
He was also one of the few Africans to win the Noble Peace Prize .

Nelson Mandela has written about the journey of his life in his autobiography “Long walk to freedom” which he wrote when he was in jail. It is one of the most famous books which is read by many for inspiration.
