Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who are known as The Duke and Duchess of Sussex —have announced that they will step back from their duties as senior members of the British royal family and that they will also become financially independent. They said that wish to split their time between the U.K. and Canada.

Who are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle?

Prince Harry is a member of the British royal family. He is Queen Elizabeth II’s grandson – being the younger son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales. His older brother is Prince William, who is called the Duke of Cambridge. Prince Harry trained at the Royal Military Academy and become a lieutenant in the Army, serving as a helicopter pilot. He helps the Queen on official duties.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry’s wife, is an American actress. She is called the Duchess of Sussex (these are titles given by the Queen)

What Does Step Back mean?

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are not allowed to earn their own income. They currently receive money from something called a Sovereign Grant – this is a payment that the government of Britain gives to the royal family for their official duties. Now they want to be financially independent and also not do the royal duties that they are supposed to do and want to lead an independent life.

They said that they are choosing a “new working model” that would allow them to have financial independence from the Monarchy as well as earn their own income. But they said that they will still support the Queen.

What are Royal duties that senior royals like Prince Harry perform?

Every year the Royal Family carries out more than 2,000 official engagements throughout the UK and worldwide. These engagements include representing The Queen and the U.K in Commonwealth or other countries, for events like like State funerals (where some head of state has passed away and someone from the Royal family needs to attend) or national festivities. Members also go for visits to foreign countries to strengthen Britain’s diplomatic and economic relations.

The Royal Family also plays an important role in supporting and encouraging the public and charity sectors. About 3,000 organisations list a member of the Royal Family as patron or president. Through these organizations, the Royal Family members meet people from all walks of life to understand their interests, problems and concerns.

The senior royals, thus, are full-time working members of the royal family who perform regular duties in the Queen’s name.

The Queen is not happy

At first the Queen issued a statement, which said: “Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

The Queen has now called a family meeting to discuss the crisis. The meeting is scheduled for Monday and will be held at the queen’s Sandringham estate about 100 miles north of London. This is the Queen’s private home and looks like this:
