Mr. Nagavara Ramarao Narayan Murthy is an Indian billionaire and industrialist in the field of information technology. He is the co-founder of India’s largest company Infosys Technology Ltd. Time Magazine has called him the father of the Indian IT sector.
His early life
Narayan Murthy was born on 20th August 1946 into a middle-class family. He spent his childhood in Karnataka along with his eight siblings. This taught him ‘sharing and caring’. His father was a school teacher and taught English, Mathematics, and Physics. Narayan Murthy had always been interested in studying mathematics as a child. This motivated him to do engineering. He graduated in electrical engineering from the National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore, and did his master’s in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.
His work life
Narayan Murthy’s first job was that of a Research Associate at IIM Ahmedabad. He started his company called Softronics. However, this company failed, after which he joined Patni Computers in Pune. In the year 1981, he cofounded Infosys, which provides technology-enabled solutions to businesses all over the world. Murthy started the outsourcing revolution and transformed India into the world’s back office. This gave a big boost to the Indian economy. He served as the CEO of Infosys Technology Ltd for 21 years. He has now retired as the Chairman of the company and is Chairman Emeritus.
His awards
He was listed as one of the twelve greatest entrepreneurs of our times by Fortune magazine. He has received The Padma Vibhushan from the President and has been honoured with many other prestigious awards.
His belief
He believes in sacrifice today and fulfillment tomorrow. Narayan Murthy is a very humble person. There is a lot we can learn from his life.
