On the 19th of December, Gabriel Boric, a young activist-turned leader, was elected as the president of Chile. This has made him one of the youngest politicians in the world.

Quick details

Gabriel Boric is part of the Social Convergence party that won 56 percent of the total vote over his 55-year-old  rival José Antonio Kast. This election is said to be one of the most political ones ever in history.

There have been many determining factors for Boric’s victory.

This has greater significance after the national protests due to frustration over a hike in subway prices, which has been going on since 2019. Chile has had a bit of instability because of those riots.

Boric is part of the left-wing and has used the election campaign to his advantage. Rather than scaring voters, he told them why they should vote for him and also focused on something related to the environment by promising the public of Chile that he would stop the mining programmes

Implications

Chile might have a good future with a democratic approach. On the other hand, the present is not looking that good as stock prices and Chile’s foreign exchange levels have reached an all-time low. This can end as one of the best things  to happen in Chile’s short time as a democracy or continue to impact the market of Chile.
