Sri Lanka has a new president named Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He was elected on the 18th of November 2019. He has a military background and has spent twenty years in the Sri Lankan army.

Gotabaya is seventy years old and the interesting thing is that one of his brothers, Mahinda Rajapaksa has been the president of Sri Lanka before – from 2005 to 2015, and now Mr. Gotabaya has appointed Mr. Mahinda as the Prime Minister!

He is currently visiting New Delhi on Thursday on a three-day visit. This is his first overseas tour after taking over as Sri Lanka president. He said that relations with India were important to him and he would take his country’s relationship with India to a “very high level”.
