Jair Bolsonaro is the president of Brazil and he has been invited by the Indian government to be the chief guest at next year’s Republic Day. Mr Bolsonaro, who has a military background, is the 38th president of Brazil.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited Mr Bolsonaro when he visited Brazil for BRICS summit last month. Mr. Modi said that he looked forward to discussing matters relating to trade and also as well as agricultural equipment, animal husbandry, post-harvest technologies and biofuels.

Why was Mr. Bolsonaro in the news recently?

Recently he was in the news because there were widespread fires in the Amazon rainforest. More than 72,000 fires were detected between January and August.

Amazon is the world’s largest rainforest, and is called the “lungs of the world” – it provides 20% of the world’s oxygen. Climate change activists have warned that the fires would impact global warming and have called the amazon an important part of the future of the planet.

Mr Bolsonaro has been criticized for being unable to stop to the fires and for actually supporting the farmers who have caused the deforestation and set the fires to clear the land for making cattle ranches.
