World Environment Day is celebrated every year on the 5th of June.  The day was first established by the UN (United Nations) General Assembly in 1972. Its purpose was to encourage awareness and action for the protection of our environment.

Everything we consume and use is all a product of our environment. It is very important to protect and maintain our environment. If we don’t do so, it would be difficult to live a healthy life, and even survive! Imagine living in a world where it’s hard to find clean drinking water, or where there are only skyscrapers and no forests or plants. Humans have caused pollution, misused resources, caused wildlife to go extinct, and cut down millions of trees.

Since 1974, WED has been celebrated annually, with a different theme every year. In 1987 the idea for selecting different host countries began. This year, 2020, the theme will be Biodiversity, and will be hosted by Colombia in partnership with Germany.

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. Different species, genetics and ecosystems. As of 2016, Colombia has the second-highest biodiversity in the world with 56,343 registered species! One in every 10 species found on Earth, can be found in Colombia.

The current situation of the world has shown us how biodiverse our ecosystem is. We are seeing flamingos and other species of birds, dolphins, deer, squirrels and chipmunks, wild cats, all roaming freely around our planet.

WED is celebrated in many ways across the world, with activities like street rallies and parades, tree planting, concerts, and clean-up campaigns. The main point of celebrating this day, is to spread awareness about our environment and let everyone know how important it is. If something is not done soon, the world would be a completely different and toxic place.
