You’ve probably heard of Quidditch – the famous game in the Harry Potter books.
Did you know that this fictional game actually inspired a real-life one? It’s true – there exists a real adaptation of the game and till now, it was called e Quidditch.
Tell me more…
Quidditch is a sport of two teams consisting of seven players who are each mounted on a broomstick and is played on a hockey rink-sized pitch. It is a mix of Dodgeball and Basketball.
It was created in 2005 and first played in Middlebury, Vermont, inspired by the fictional game Quidditch in the Harry Potter books. Since its founding, the sport has expanded to 40 countries and nearly 600 teams, that’s a huge number!
Now, the game is changing its name to Quadball.
Here’s why
It started with two main governing bodies of the game, named the US Quadball and Major League Quadball, in North America announcing that they are changing the name.
This was followed by The International Quidditch Association saying it would do the same.
But why?
Looks like there are two reasons
One main reason was that the associations wanted to distance themselves from the author of”Harry Potter”, J.K. Rowling, because she made anti-t transgender comments that were not very nice.
Also, another issue was that none of the organizations owned the “quidditch” trademark – which is a symbol, word, or words legally registered or established by use as representing a company or product.
Now as you are aware of the new name of Quidditch, make sure to always use the new name ‘Quadball’ instead of Quidditch.
