Curious to know about universe’s dark, mysterious monsters? The ones that keep popping up in sci-fi books and movies? I am talking about the Black Holes – one of the most puzzling yet powerful forces of the outer space.

So, what is this spooky sounding hole?

A Black Hole is a deep, dark region in the outer space from which possibly nothing can escape, not even light.

Wondering why is it called ‘black’?

The name ‘black’ has been given to it because it takes in all of the light that comes close to its proximity. resembles a thick, black whirlpool which sucks everything that comes near it.

A black hole has the highest gravitational force you can ever find. According to a few theories, black holes emit radiation which, makes them gradually reduce their size and eventually die.

Strange things happen around these holes…

Firstly, you can’t really see a black hole but can just observe it. We can be sure of their existence from the ways they affect nearby dust particles, constellations of stars and galaxies. Most galaxies including our Milky Way, have supermassive black holes at their very centre. These may be millions and billions of times larger and heavier than our Sun.

How a black hole is formed?

A black hole can be formed by the death of a massive star. When such a star has exhausted, the core becomes instable and gravitationally falls upon itself, and due to the compression of certain gases a black hole is formed.

Know this faceless void better:

  • A black hole is basically a dead star.
  • As you get closer to a black hole, time slows down. Whoa!
  • The black hole in the Milky Way, is in the Sagittarius constellation.
  • Some black holes can give birth to stars.
  • Black holes die over time.
