Imagine that you are on a walk on the Yamuna riverbank and you see sparkling water with many beautiful birds. How charming! Now, imagine that same walk on the same riverbank but in the year 2020. I would not even call the Yamuna river a river anymore. Now it is only worthy of being called a filthy drain.

In India all the rivers are given a title which is Maiya. Maiya in English means ‘mother,’ hence the name Yamuna Maiya. And I personally would not treat my mom the way we are treating the Yamuna River these days.

It is high time that we, as responsible citizens, should raise our voices and act. Only when citizens take steps to better their country, only then can the government take action. Other than the government, NGOs and other parties can help in betterment of the Yamuna river.

The necessary steps to be taken to better the river should be: –

-Beautify the riverbanks by planting trees

Set sewage treatment plants throughout the Yamuna riverbank and sewage treatment plants with more power in places like Kondli and Rithala

Make Ghats for Chhat Pooja Prayers so that the streamers can come and take the solid waste generated during the prayer quickly.

Dig pits and fill them with holy water taken from the river so all the religious activities such as idol immersions, etc. can happen in the pit and not in the Yamuna River.

Many sectors and places such as sector 72 in Noida have already started to practice the pit activity and are doing excellently well.

Let us all join hands and fight this demon called pollution and save our maiya!!! Always remember any environmental action is not easy but it is also not impossible….
