US President Joe Biden invited 40 world leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a virtual climate summit. The two-day summit will begin on April 22nd, which is also Earth Day, and end on April 23rd. It will be live-streamed for public viewing.

What is the agenda of this summit?

The Leaders’ Summit on Climate will focus mainly on the need for stronger climate action. The summit will also be a key to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) which will be held this November in Glasgow.

In recent years, scientists have emphasized the need to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius to avoid any major impact due to global warming. The goal of the summit will be to accelerate the efforts to keep the warming limit within the reach. The summit will also highlight examples wherein a good climate ambition will create jobs, advancements in technology, and overall an improved economy. It will also help vulnerable countries to adapt to climate changes.

In his invitation, the President requested the leaders to use the Summit as an opportunity to present how their countries are planning to tackle the climate issues and contribute to the overall climate ambition. As individuals, we could do our bit to contribute to the climate ambition by taking small measures starting from our home, by simple measures like recycling more and saving water.
