Alan Turing was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, and theoretical biologist. However, what Turing is most famous for is his role during the second world war, when he broke the code of a German device and helped win the war. He was also considered the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.
He was born on 23rd June 1912 in Maida vale, London, United Kingdom and died on 7th June 1954, aged 41 at Wilmslow, Cheshire, United Kingdom. He committed suicide by poisoning himself.
As stated earlier, Turing has been credited with being the brain behind the philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. During the Second World War, he played a critical role in breaking the codes of the German encryption device, Enigma, and shortened the duration of the war by 2 years.
During World War II, he built an electromechanical machine, called the Bombe, which broke the German Enigma code. He laid the groundwork for modern computing and theoretical artificial intelligence.
Alan Turing was honored with many awards, the most famous one being the Smith’s Award which he received in 1936 for logical Mathematics Cryptanalysis, Computer Science, Mathematical and Theoretical Biology in by the University of Manchester’s Government Code and Cipher School National Physical Laboratory
Turing died in 1954,16 days before his 42nd birthday due to cyanide poisoning. He was charged with being a homosexual, which was illegal at the time.
