 Current Scenario

As we know, Sri Lanka at present is going through a critical crisis. There are quite a few reasons for this, the major ones being economic depression and a huge loan taken from China and other countries.

The constant conflict between Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) – a Tamilian group fighting for an independent state – and the ruling Sinhalese, who are in majority, has also contributed to the disastrous situation.

Rolling blackouts, crashing of the currency, and a severe shortage of medication, fuel, and food are rampant in the country. Discontent and angry residents are torching homes and offices of government officials.

Cause and Effect: Such internal disturbance has had a terrible impact on the tourist sector as well, a major source of income for the Sri Lankan economy. COVID -19 has added to an already bad situation.

The present inflation rate, in Sri Lanka, is extremely high and the cost of living has shot up, far beyond the reach of ordinary citizens. (Inflation is the rate of increase in prices over a given period of time.)

Also, the poor policies of ousted President,  Gotabaya Rajapaksa, are also a major reason for the present situation leading to unrest and revolt against the government.

All the above led to a situation of civil war in the country, as people took to the streets in protest and demanded the resignation of the Gotabaya Rajapaksa – under whose rule the country has become impoverished to the point that basic supplies like food, medicines, and fuel have become hard to get.

The protests became so violent that the country erupted and because of this, the President had to resign and flee from the country. There is a total chaos at present in Sri Lanka.

Now with the new President, Ranil Wickremesinghe,  in place there is hope that things become better for the Sri Lankans, although some are protesting against him too, saying that he too is part of the same regime that ruled before..

Hope: Like the oft-quoted saying – it’s darkest before the dawn – we hope things improve for the nation
