When are the 2020 Summer Olympic Games?

The summer Olympics start on the 24th of July and end on the 9th of August 2020. They will be held in Tokyo, the capital of Japan.

Has Tokyo ever hosted the games before?

Yes, it has – once before in 1964. And this time some new sports are going to be added, like skateboarding, karate, surfing and sport climbing.

What’s the mascot this time?

The official mascot of the games is a futuristic creature called – Miraitowa. It gets its name from the Japanese words “mirai” (meaning future) and “towa” (meaning eternity) – the idea being a hope for a bright future for eternity..(forever). In fact there are two mascots, who were chosen by school kids in Japan – one is Miraitowa and the other is for the Paralympics, which is called Someity. While Miraitowa has a blue-checked look, Someity’s pink look has been inspired by Japan’s cherry blossoms (beautiful flowers found in Japan). It also sounds a bit like the English words “so mighty”. Both these fictional characters have various superpowers.

WORDS TO KNOW:

Paralympics: The Paralympic Games or Paralympics are international multi-sport events involving athletes with a range of disabilities

Eternity: Forever. Endless or unending time.
