How Did Donald Trump Become President?

Becoming the president is like applying for the biggest job in the country, and it takes several steps.

Here’s how Donald Trump became the leader of the United States:

Deciding to Run For President

In 2015, Donald Trump decided to run for president. This is called “running for president.” He wanted to lead the country and make changes he thought would help people.

He gave speeches and talked about his big plans, like:

Creating more jobs for Americans
Improving safety and security.
Making better trade deals with other countries

He also used Twitter and TV to share his ideas, so many people heard about him.

Joining a Party

In the U.S., people who want to be president often join a group called a political party. Think of it as a team of people with similar ideas about how to help the country.

Donald Trump joined a party called the Republicans. The other big party is called the Democrats, and they often compete with each other in elections.

Winning Against Others In His Party

To represent the Republican team, Donald Trump had to compete against others in the same party who also wanted to be president.

This is called a primary election. He gave speeches and told people his plans for the country. After months of voting, he became the official Republican candidate for president. This means he was the one person chosen to represent his team.

The Big Election

Once Donald Trump was chosen to represent the Republicans, he competed against Hillary Clinton, who was chosen to represent the Democrats. This competition is called the general election – when everyone in the country votes to choose the next president.

Winning the Presidency

On November 8, 2016, people across the country voted, and Donald Trump got the most votes in the states he needed to win. This made him the 45th President of the United States. He officially started the job on January 20, 2017.

On November 5, 2024, Donald Trump won the election and became the 47th President of the United States, starting his second term on January 20, 2025. This made him one of only two presidents in U.S. history to serve non-consecutive terms (the first was Grover Cleveland over 100 years ago).
