First with a little about Greenland – it is the world’s largest island and 80% of it is ice and water (not that green really). Just over 55,000 people live in Greenland. Its largest city and capital is Nuuk, which has a population of about 20,000 people. It belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark, though it is free to make some decisions on its own (it’s an autonomous country).

So, can you just buy a country?

Donald Trump thinks that it will be a great country for the U.S. to own, since Greenland is located right next to it and is very rich in minerals. However, Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen does not want to sell Greenland. So now President Trump says he will put off a planned visit to Denmark. He said he would reschedule his visit and thanked Frederiksen for saving “a great deal of expense for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct.”

WORDS TO KNOW:
