This was a proud moment for India.
Here’s all about her and the event
First, who is Nikhat Zareen?
She’s from a little place called Nizamabad, in Telangana state.
She has three sisters, but Nikat is said to have been the most mischievous – often getting into fights with kids in the neighbourhood. She loved climbing trees as a child and wanted to get into boxing early on – even as she questioned why women didn’t get into boxing.
Trained with boys..
When she started training, there were no girls in boxing, so she trained with boys.
Now, about the medal she won.
On the 19th of May, Nikhat Zareen won a goal medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championships held at Istanbul, Turkey. She beat Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the 52kg flyweight category.
Nikat has become the fifth Indian woman to become a world champion. And, this is India’s first gold medal at the championship since Olympic boxer Mary Kom won here in 2018.
- She’s won the sub-junior national title
- A gold medal at the Junior & Youth World Championships in 2011.
- A silver at the Youth World Championships in 2013
