Davos is a beautiful little town in Switzerland. It is located on a glittering river, called Landwasser, in the Eastern Alps. The Alps are a spectacular mountain range in Europe that stretch about 1,200 kilometres across eight countries like, France, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, and Slovenia.
So why is it in the news?
Every year a meeting is held by World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos and many world leaders and famous businesspeople attend it. The WEF is an international organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. All the members of this organization meet for a conference every year to discuss major issues concerning the world.
Many issues facing the world are discussed here, including politics, economics, social, and environmental problems. The main reason that the WEF was founded was to get leaders from different fields and parts of the world together so that they could jointly find solutions for the challenges (problems) facing the world. For example, climate change is always a big theme at Davos.
Greta Thunberg will be at Davos
Teenage Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg will be at the meet talking about climate change (if you don’t know who she is, read this article written by a grade 8 student earlier). She has been asking world leaders what they have been doing about stopping climate change. She will be a speaker at the conference and will talk about how governments have to stop investing in fossil fuels (which are running the environment).
U.S. President Donald Trump will also be there, apart from Sanna Marin, the Prime Minister of Finland and many other world and business leaders. Russian President Vladimir Putin may also be there.
Who is going from India?
Commerce minister Piyush Goyal will lead the Indian delegation. More than 100 Indian CEOs, (heads of companies) as well as many political leaders and some Bollywood stars including Deepika Padukone are in Davos this year.
When is it taking place?
It starts tomorrow the 21st of January and will go in till Friday, the 24th of January, 2020.
