On the 8th of February Delhi will vote in the Legislative Assembly Elections. It’s going to be a tough battle between the Aam Admi party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress Party.

There are 70 members in Delhi’s Legislative Assembly and people will vote to elect them today.

What’s a Legislative Assembly?

So, every state needs people to govern it and has a ruling body, which is called a Legislative Assembly. The members who are part of this are called MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly). They are the ones who will need to be elected on the 8th. . The government will be formed depending on how many MLAs win from which party.  – depending on how many are elected from which party. For example, the last time the elections were held in 2015, AAP won 67 of the 70 seats and so it formed the government and Arvind Kejriwal became the Chief Minister.

I am confused, is Delhi a state or a Union Territory?

It’s a little complicated. In India, normally you have either states (like Rajasthan, Bihar etc), or you have Union Territories. The main difference between the two is that a state has its own government but Union territories are governed directly by the central government – they don’t have their own Legislative Assemblies.

But, Delhi’s case is a little different. Technically Delhi is a Union Territory – though it is not called that, the right name is National Capital Territory (NCT) – this name was given to it to make it different from other Union Territories. It is not governed by the Central Government. So it actually resembles a State in that way – because it has its own governing body. But, and this is where it gets more confusing, there are some matters that the Central Government still controls in Delhi – like Delhi Police and the Municipal Body. So Delhi is a National Capital Territory.

The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi is the constitutional head of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

For the elections, about 75,000 security personnel will be on duty during the elections – including Delhi Police, the paramilitary forces and home guards.

If you are in Delhi – make sure your parents and everyone eligible goes to vote!
