Two Indians Win at The FIDE Grand Swiss Chess Event – Explained Simply
The Grand Swiss Tournament is a very prestigious (famous and well known) international chess tournament. It is organised by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs).
On November 5, 2023, two Indian chess players – Vidit Gujrathi and R. Vaishali won at the Grand Swiss tournament.
What is the The Grand Swiss Tournament?
The Grand Swiss Tournament is a very prestigious (famous and well known) international chess tournament. It is organised by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs).
It is held every year in a place called the Isle of Man – which is, what’s called, a self-governing British Crown dependency – a little island located between England and Ireland, in the Irish sea.
The world’s top chess players participate in this event.
Why is the FIDE Grand Swiss Chess Tournament Important?
The FIDE Grand Swiss is part of the FIDE Grand Prix series. It is a qualifier event for a bigger tournament called the Candidates Tournament – the final contest for the World Chess Championship title.
The winner of the Grand Swiss goes to the Candidates Tournament, where they then compete to challenge the present World Chess Champion.
This is why the The FIDE Grand Swiss is important – as it gives the players a chance to compete for the ultimate prize in chess – the World Chess Championship.
Vidit Gujrathi and R. Vaishali will now go on to the World Chess Championship at Toronto early next year.
Who is R. Vaishali?
Rameshbabu Vaishali is an Indian chess player. She holds the FIDE title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) – a title given by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) to women chess players who are very skilled and perform at a very high level. She got the title of Woman Grandmaster (WGM) by after she completed her final norm in the Riga Technical University Open chess tournament in Riga, Latvia on 12 August 2018
Vaishali was born in Chennai and is the elder sibling of Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa.
Who is Vidit Gujrathi?
Vidit Santosh Gujrathi is an Indian chess player and a grandmaster. He became a grandmaster in January 2013 – at that time he was the 30th player from India to become a gramdmaster.
He has won many championships and tournaments and, as of September 2023, he is the fourth highest rated player in India.
