After the unrest in protest against the Citizenship Amendment, the Uttar Pradesh government had banned large gatherings of people in the state by imposing Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

What is Section 144?

Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) bans the gatherings of four or more people in one area. According to the law, every member of such ‘unlawful assembly’ can be booked for engaging in rioting.

Why is it used?

Section 144 is put by the authorities in times when there is unrest in society (for any reason) and there is a chance of danger or trouble or damage to human life or property. Section 144 of CrPC generally prohibits public gathering.
