We all have heard of many famous water bodies around the world, like the Pacific Ocean, Arabian Sea, or even the Sukhna Lake located in the beautiful city of Chandigarh. But, one name which we have heard many times is of the Dead Sea. This water body is famous for many reasons. Through this article, I will tell you all about this fascinating water body.

Firstly, this sea is actually a lake. Yup, the Dead Sea is a lake because it is not extremely large and is in fact a small water body that is surrounded by land which can be viewed from all other sides. It is called a sea because the salt concentration in it is very high and thus there can be no life in it. This is the fact that confuses many people and there are still many debates going on whether this lake should be called a sea or not.

Also called the Salt Sea, this lake is located between Israel and Jordan (an Arab nation). It receives its water from the Jordan River, which flows in from the north. Its part in the country of Jordan is more famous since Jordan receives more tourists compared to Israel, and thus you can find this lake extremely busy and crowded on the Jordanian half.

So, the question is why is this lake so famous? Why is it called the ‘dead’ sea? Well, as I mentioned above, this lake has a very high salt concentration. Thus, no life can exist in it. Thus, it is called the dead sea. The fact that it has a very high salt concentration also results in people, or many other organisms and objects, to not sink in it! Yes, it is nearly impossible to sink in this lake, meaning you can go into it without a life jacket and still float in the water! This is due to the fact that the high salt concentration makes the water much denser than a human. If the liquid is denser than the body, the body cannot sink in it since the molecules in water will push the body up.

This is just one example of the many miracles of nature! It is just wonderful what nature can do!
