Joe Biden, who is running for President of America (means that he is running against Donald Trump to become the President) picked Kamala Harris as his running mate – meaning that he wants her to be the Vice President when, and if, he becomes President. The election is to be held on the 3rd of November 2020.
Why is this making news
For many reasons. Kamala Harris, who belongs to California, has become the first Black woman and the first person of Indian descent to be nominated for national office by a major party. Her full name is Kamala Devi Harris.
Her’s is an inspirational story of immigrant parents who achieved a lot. Her father is African American (an immigrant from Jamaica who is a former professor of Economics at Stanford University) and her mother was an Indian who was a cancer researcher and civil rights activist (she died of cancer in 2009).
Kamala, now 55, was born in Oakland, California. She is a former attorney general of California and a former San Francisco district attorney.
Last year When on Martin Luther King’s Birthday, she actually announced that she would be running for President and became a competitor to Joe Biden. However, she later dropped out. Now she is his partner in the election.
