Our world is full of good stuff, like philanthropists and honest people and ice-cream, but as good arises, so must bad. Corruption, greed, they take up a lot of society.
One such case was Malaysia’s ex-Prime Minister, Najib Razak. He was implicated in a fraud and corruption case.
Who is Najib Razak?
He served as prime minister from 2009 to 2018. His father was another Prime Minister, Abdul Razak Hussain. He was implicated in a 1MDB case.
What is 1MBD?
1MBD stands for 1 Malaysia Development Berhad. It is a research and development company. In 2015, Razak was implicated in laundering 2.67 billion RM, approximately 700 million USD.
What happened in the case?
Razak was accused of money laundering, fraud and breach of trust. He pleaded not guilty on all accounts, which basically means he’s saying he didn’t do it. The case is a bold move by Malaysia’s anti-corruption efforts. The outcome of the case was he was given 12 years jail time for abuse of power and 10 years for money laundering.
