Who Was Bahrain’s Longest-Serving Prime Minister Who Died Recently?

One of the world’s longest-serving head of a government died on the 11th of November. His name was  Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and he was the Prime Minister of Bahrain from 1970 till his death a few weeks ago.

 Who was Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa?

He was one of the royal and prosperous Princes of Dubai, UAE. He is credited for shaping Bahrain and making it a vibrant and economically independent island nation. He served as the Prime Minister from 1942 to 1961. But in 1961 he decided to delegate the responsibility of handling the island’s strategic and ceremonial duties to his brother, Sheikh Isa bin Salman al-Khalifa. This unofficial arrangement served till the independence of Bahrain in 1971, while he handled the government and economic activities of Bahrain.

. He ran Bahrain’s government successfully for almost 5 decades and also actively participated in the 2011 Arab Spring Protest that started by the Shia majority of Muslims for demanding the removal of Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa because according to them he was corrupted and provided protection and biased towards Sunni Muslims majority and other minority groups. Then he demanded his elimination of these charges.

In 1961, he played a pivotal role in taking the economy higher because he sought to move ahead over its dependence on the dwindling oil reserves. The nation was the base home of the U.S Navy 5th Fleet.

 In 1985, he had his first heart attack, but he recovered soon. However, in 1988, he had a  second heart attack and had to undergo a triple bypass surgery.. His health problems did not end. In  2019, he went to Germany for treatment and came back to Bahrain in March 2020. Soon after this, he went to the U.S.A for treatment. He passed away on November 11th.

On that day, the royal court of Bahrain declared an official week of mourning.. People paid him tributes by reciting Quranic verses.

At last, to conclude that Prince Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa was one of the successful Prime Ministers who was praised by all and was known for his leadership.

Bahrain is a country in the Persian Gulf. The island nation is made up of 51 natural islands and an additional 33 artificial islands. It is the third-smallest nation in Asia after the Maldives and Singapore. 

Its capital city is Manama.
