There has been a lot of talk about COVID-19, or the coronavirus, which originated in China in the month of December. It has now engulfed the entire world. However, It has been my observation that in India, people are more scared of the word ‘Quarantine’ than the virus itself.

We all know how Coronavirus made its way into India. So, I am not going to talk about that. Instead, I want to talk about quarantine.

 Self Quarantine

Self-quarantine, or self-isolation, is the magic mantra to avoid the disease – to keep yourself safe and also not pass it to the world around you. I shall explain this by taking the example of four people namely A, B, C and D.

Imagine that A Is the first carrier (overseas travel). He no reported symptoms and so he is allowed to leave roam around, even though it would have been advisable to self-quarantine or self-isolate. However, since he has no symptoms, he does not follow any rules. But, he can still be a carrier and start a chain of deleterious events.

So A moves out to meet C and en-route encounters B in trains, buses, planes and even on roads B is unknown and therefore untraceable.

A meets C and transmits the infection. Both of them are traceable however B and D (who meets B) is untraceable and thus the virus spreads. Had A exercised self-isolation and self-quarantine the chain of events would not have happened.

So, the need of the hour is to be disciplined and isolate in case you have travelled abroad.

Nature’s way of healing is rest – so give your body adequate time to heal. It’s every citizen’s responsibility to practice self-isolation for a healthier India.
