Archaeologists in Mexico City have discovered bones of 60 mammoths at a construction site that was once a lake. Mammoths were large creatures with trunks and tusks, just like elephants, who got extinct about 10,000 years ago.

The bones of the mammoths were found in an area called Xaltocan. Scientists believe that since this area produced plenty of grass and reeds, it attracted mammoths. The lake has been dried up for centuries. An army base was built here, which is now demolished, and a new international airport is being constructed in its place.

Are there more mammoths? Archaeologists started digging last October and are still hoping for more. In the last six months, they have found 60 mammoths till now. Institute archeologist Pedro Sánchez Nava says that there are too many—almost hundreds of them. He works with the National Institute of Anthropology and History. Pedro believes that they must be able to find at least ten mammoths a month.

The excavation will have to end by 2022 when the airport will be fully completed. By then, there may be news of more mammoth remains. We will keep you posted.
