Celebrated on the 23rd of January, Parakram Diwas, literally translates as courage.

The day is the birth anniversary of one of the most courageous freedom fighters the country has seen; Subhas Chandra Bose fondly called Netaji. 

January 23 was declared as Parakram Diwas by the government in the year 2021 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Netaji.

On the 23rd of January, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually participated in an online event in which he unveiled the model of a memorial dedicated that will be dedicated to Netaji and which will be set up in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

PM Modi also officially named the largest unnamed islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands after 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees.

Param Vir Chakra and its significance 

  • The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is the country’s highest military decoration.
  • Its awarded for displaying distinguished acts of valour during wartime and is granted for ‘most conspicuous bravery in the presence of the enemy
  • Param Vir Chakra translates as the ‘Wheel of the Ultimate Brave’.

Details of the memorial on Netaji

The memorial will be set up on Ross Island which was renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep in 2018.

It will have a museum, a cable car ropeway, a theme-based children’s amusement park, a guided heritage trail through historical buildings, a restro-lounge, and a laser-and-sound show.

Who was Subhas Chanda Bose – a quick look

Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January 23, 1897.

He established the Azad Hind Fauj and played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement. He joined the freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and became the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress. Together with Nehru, Bose represented the more militant wing of the party against the more moderate Gandhian faction.

There is a controversy over Netaji’s death in a plane crash in Taipei on August 18, 1945. In an RTI (Right to Information) the Central government confirmed that he did die in the incident.

In 2022, on the occasion of Netaji’s 125th birth anniversary, PM Modi unveiled the hologram statue of the freedom fighter at India Gate in Delhi.
