What is the aim of this event?
The Group of Seven(G7) is an organization of the world’s largest so-called advanced economies which comprise Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US. Officials meet throughout the year but an annual summit is a prominent event where leaders talk about the most prevalent issues that are being faced.
The UK has invited India to be part of the Summit as a guest. Prime Minister Modi will join the conference virtually.
The main focus of this event is global growth and challenges to the global economy. Every year incentives are rejuvenated for growth and prosperity, trade barriers are ended and energy markets are re-opened but the center of discussion at this year’s summit is covid recovery along with climate change and numerous other agendas.
When and where is it taking place?
Amidst the ongoing pandemic, the 47th G7 summit is being held in Cornwall, England from 11th to 13th June 2021. It is taking place in Cornwall as the United Kingdom holds the presidency this year and the region is seen as central to Britain’s green tech sector. Despite the beautiful coastline and countryside that will act as the backdrop to the gathering, Cornwall is one of the poorest regions in the UK and is heavily reliant on agriculture and seasonal tourism.
Will any actions take place?
The G7 does not include China, India, and Russia as members, and is criticized for the absence of many countries in decision-making on world affairs. Like another major meeting of world leaders, summits can often be nothing more than a talking shop for a change.
The decisions made by the G7 can have a huge impact. This was evident by the crucial role it played in setting up a global fund to fight malaria and Aids in 2002.
Britain wants “leaders to seize the opportunity to build back better from coronavirus, uniting to make the future fairer, greener and more prosperous.” Therefore, this summit is also seen as one of the few forums where the world’s most influential leaders and advanced economies are brought together in order to tackle the greatest challenges.
